Before I stopped on this deviation I had looked through the whole gallery and I think this piece is the best equine drawing. I can see...

The contest

Journal Entry: Sun Oct 18, 2009, 12:18 PM

The contest is called "Horses in Literature"

Some people look for inspiration in othr people's galleries, some go to artgalleries, some find it in real life and some find it in books. Considering the lack of reading in the nowadays world and the fact that some of the artists here ask for a source for inspiration, I decided to hold this contest.

Your inspiration will be based on a quote from a book. Mind please, that this is the first time I have a contest, so there may be drawbacks, so please, feel free to advise me if anything is wrong or can be done better. Right now I'm planning to give you 2 months for the whole contest.
As you will need to read a book, I will give you a month to do it. This may not necessarily be a "book", a story will do also.
The second month will be devoted to your drawing. This is briefly.

Here are the rules:

WHAT IS ALLOWED TO DO

- your artwork can be digital or traditional, or it can be a photomanipulation. Photography, literature/filming are not accepted.

- IMPORTANT! - the quotation must be taken from a piece of serious literature! No comics/fanfiction please! even if the comics are written by "very talented artists/writers here on DA". It's not because I don't appreciate what people on DA or wherever else do, it's just because the goal of THIS contest is to make you read fiction written by world-known writers.
Any genre apart from comics/fanfiction are welcomed in case they are written by authors that can be found in state libraries :D: poetry, science-fiction, fantasy, fairy-tales, novels, etc.

- your art should be based on a quote. i.e. you don't have to illustrate the whole book or display the idea of a story. It means that you should choose a particular quote and illustrate it. And when you are done with the artwork, include the quote in the quotation marks in the "artist's comments" so that everyone could see which lines exactly you illustrated.

- The key words of this contest are: LITERATURE, QUOTE and ILLUSTRATION. No movies and cartoons! If you draw in Spirit-like style, you are welcome to take part, but no scenes from the Spirit cartoon, please.

- IMPORTANT! - Any quote won't do. The idea is to get artists aquainted with books and stories where the main characters are horses! So the illustration may not be based on a quote from a battlefield where horses are used for fighting, unless the horse is the main character or belongs to the main character during the whole story.

ANSWERING POSSIBLE QUESTION:

- What about books like Lord of the Rings? (insert the name of any other movie with a similar situation) There are horses there but it was a book primary, so can I illustrate a quote from it?
It wasn't a movie, I agree, but as was stated above, you are allowed to illustrate a horse which is the main character of a story or belongs to the main character and is unseparated from him/her. There was a scene in the Lord of the Rings (the 2nd part) when Gendalf leaves a castle on a grey horse (don't remember its name). The scene is great, but this doesn't count.

If you still don't have any idea what I'm talking about, here is the story, ideal for the contest theme:

The Black Beauty

(I'll try to add more, but it's difficult at 0:10 AM)

So, summing up:
- must be based on a quotation from a story by a serious author
- a horse must be the main character or be unseparated from the main character if he/she owns this horse and participate in everything the main character does.
- movies/cartoons are not allowed
- photography/films/literature are NOT allowed. If you don't draw, but are good at manipulating, feel free to enter!

The prises and a judging process will be announced in the next journal.
Start choosing a book!
